Antwerp (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): Police conducted a large-scale operation near Antwerp Central Station to address ongoing issues with drug problems and other crimes, resulting in 13 arrests and the closure of 4 businesses.

The action was taken because more people are complaining about problems near the Central Station. Wouter Bruns from the Antwerp police said, “There’s an ongoing issue with drug problems and other crimes. People often feel scared and face harassment, making it hard to live there. It’s our job to fix this.” Many police teams helped out, including mobile units, neighborhood teams, dog teams, and bike teams, along with the social inspectorate and the Immigration Office.

What prompted the police crackdown near Antwerp Central Station?

During the operation, police checked 181 people and arrested 13. Two of them had weapons or were wanted in an ongoing case, while others were arrested for being drunk, causing trouble, or staying in the country illegally. Police found two knives and small amounts of cocaine and marijuana. One driver was caught using drugs, and his license was taken away for two weeks.

Four businesses were also shut down for issues found during the checks. “We come here often and know where the problems are,” said Wouter Bruyns of the police . Mayor Bart De Wever mentioned that the area around Central Station is a key place in the city. He said the local police are taking strong actions to keep the neighborhood safe for everyone. They’re focusing on problem spots, criminals, and anyone who might affect the quality of life there.

Adriana Monteiro, a local resident, believes these safety actions should happen more often because there’s a lot of drug use in her neighborhood, making her feel unsafe. Taxi driver Wahid Shinwari agrees, saying he often sees drug dealing at his taxi spot and has had to call the police when people act violently. They both think that regular police actions can help keep the area safer for everyone.
