Warsaw (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Poland’s newly sworn President, Karol Nawrocki, vowed on Wednesday to amend the nation’s constitution to protect its sovereignty during a speech to parliament following his inauguration. He also expressed opposition to further EU integration, illegal migration, and the adoption of the euro.
Nawrocki addressed both houses of parliament, vowing to represent ordinary Poles and to govern without party bias.
“I will make decisions not along political divisions, but against them—always in line with the voice of the Polish people,”
Karol Nawrocki stated.
What is Nawrocki’s stance on illegal immigration policies?
As reported, he presented himself as a conservative leader whose main goal would be to protect national identity, security, and values. He was also reported to have stated that his presidency would work against illegal immigration, the euro, and increasing the retirement age, restating that he supports the national currency, the zloty, for Poland.
Although Nawrocki criticises many European Union policies, he emphasises that Poland stays committed to the EU—yet not at the cost of its “independence.” He pledged to advocate for citizens who “want a Poland that is part of the European Union, but not the European Union—a Poland that remains Poland.”
How does Nawrocki plan to expand Poland’s military power?
The new president also emphasised his dedication to bolstering the military and enhancing Poland’s position within NATO, with the goal of making the Polish army the largest NATO force on EU territory.
He supported strengthening the eastern flank of the alliance and fostering closer cooperation with the United States and Central and Eastern European allies, which includes expanding the Bucharest Nine group to incorporate Nordic countries.
What constitutional changes is President Nawrocki planning to make?
Nawrocki criticised what he called ongoing violations of the constitution and committed not to appoint judges who “undermine Poland’s legal order.”
“Judges must realise they are not above the law—they are here to serve the country and its citizens,”
he stated.
On domestic policy, he promised to back “a good Polish school” grounded in national culture and values, highlighting education, literature, and civic pride.
How might Nawrocki’s agenda challenge Donald Tusk’s government?
Following President Karol Nawrocki’s heavy emphasis on national sovereignty, Poland’s government responded with severe political tensions and institutional paralysis between Nawrocki and the pro-EU government led by Donald Tusk. The government coalition, which favours EU alignment, conceived Nawrocki’s agenda as a challenge; any potential weakening of Poland’s status as an EU member state and the resultant policy impediments will limit European governance.
