About 400 people held a support demonstration for Mathis on Poelaertplein on Sunday. That 9-year-old boy was involved in a racist incident at school on September 5, after which a police officer pushed him to the ground with his knees.
The incident occurred at a primary school in the province of Hainaut. Mathis was subjected to racist accusations by another student, after which he fell into an uncontrollable mood and the teaching staff was forced to call the police. The Charleroi public prosecutor’s office subsequently decided not to open an investigation into the officers who allegedly tried to subdue Mathis, but did open an investigation into the boy himself.
The support movement for Mathis and the boy’s mother demands, among other things, that criminal and disciplinary proceedings against him be stopped and that Minister of Education Caroline Désir condemns the racism to which they say he was a victim. Désir previously announced that she had requested a detailed report of the entire incident. She also had a telephone conversation with Mathis’ mother.
