Oudenaarde (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Archeopark Ename in Oudenaarde is being renovated early (started the week of May 5, 2025) to preserve the medieval abbey. Deputy David Coppens (N-VA) highlights improved accessibility, education, and visitor experience.

As VRT News reported, the Archeopark Ename in Oudenaarde is currently undergoing a renovation to preserve and enhance its historical significance. They mentioned that this project centres on the stone foundations of the medieval abbey, which are a key part of the site’s history. The province is working to reinforce these foundations to prevent further damage and ensure they last for future generations.

The renovation involves updated information panels, digital reconstructions, and enhanced landscaping to guide visitors through the site. Officials mentioned that the overall goal is to create a more engaging and accessible experience, connecting visitors with the rich history of the abbey and the broader Ename region.

How is Flanders investing €785k to renew Archeopark Ename in Oudenaarde?

According to Deputy David Coppens (N-VA), this project is more than just fixing things. It’s an investment in the site’s cultural value and visitor experience. East Flanders wants to improve the site while keeping it authentic. The Heritage Café next to the park will also get a makeover, including a new terrace.

The renovation at Archeopark Ename started earlier than planned. The construction company, which was supposed to start later, said they could begin the week of May 5, 2025. Deputy David Coppens (N-VA) said that it’s unusual for projects to start early. Because of this, the province quickly gave the okay for the work to begin.

He mentioned that the renovation is going well and is on track. Even with the construction, the Archeopark is still open to visitors. They’re making sure people can still visit and enjoy the historical site while the work is happening.

The current renovation is just the start for Archeopark Ename. Deputy Coppens said there’s a bigger plan. Right now, they’re fixing the abbey’s base and making it easier to understand the site. A second phase is planned to make the park easier for everyone to visit.

They also want to help people learn more about the history there. The province wants to keep improving the Archeopark for the future. Coppens said these changes will help protect and share the history of Ename so everyone can enjoy it for years.

“The intention is for a follow-up phase. All in the context of better accessibility and better readability of the heritage. That is something we want to continue to focus on with the province,”

Concludes Coppens.
