Nina Derwael: Sint-Truiden rising star shines at Tokyo 2020

Sint-Truiden (The Brussels Morning newspaper): Nina Derwael a gymnast from Sint-Truiden almost won a medal in the uneven bars final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Her hometown fans cheered her on for her great performance.

Nina Derwael the Belgian gymnast from Riemst, Sint-Truiden did really well in the uneven bars final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Even though she had some tough times with injuries before the Games it was a big deal that she made it to the final. In Riemst her hometown lots of fans came together to watch the final on big screens and cheer for their local hero. She did really well but she didn’t get a medal. She ended up just missing out on being on the podium which was kind of sad because she worked so hard to get to that level.

What did Nina Derwael’s fans say after her Olvmpic performance?

On 5th August they put a big screen at the summer bar Mason Folie on Domein’t Speelhof to cheer for Nina. Ingrid from Truien said it was really important to be there for Nina especially after all she’s been through. Even though Nina had surgery recently she did an amazing job in her performanc, which Ingrid and others thought was great. Ingrid was sad that Nina didn’t get 4th place which she thought Nina deserved for all her hard work. Ingrid and others really respect Nina for being so strong and dedicated believing that her performance should have been recognized even more.

Monique had a great time watching the women’s final at the summer bar Mason Folie even though she was going to have a drink somewhere else at first. She understood how important it was so she and her friends came back and got ready for the final at 3:30 PM. Monique felt sad that Nina almost got 4th place missing it by just a tiny bit of time. Monique had a blast in the afternoon watching Nina do her thing. She thought Nina did an amazing job especially after all the hard work she put into getting better. Monique was really impressed by Nina’s performance and felt proud to have someone so talented from their town. She admired Nina’s determination and skill a lot.

Most folks in Truien were rooting for Nina Derwael to snag another medal but she narrowly missed the podium. Kenny expressed pride in all Belgian athletes in Paris but highlighted Truien’s special pride in Nina acknowledging her deserving a medal despite the near miss. Chloe admired Nina’s graceful routine and lamented the tiny gap from third place yet emphasized immense pride in Nina’s achievement. Jasper Hansen the bar owner shared excitement about Nina aiming for the 2028 Games in LA, acknowledging the disappointment of missing a medal but celebrating Nina’s impressive 4th place at the Olympics.
