Brussels (The Brussels Morning Newspaper) – MEP Mario Furore urged action following attacks on Foggia’s Riuniti hospital.
In a note, Mario Furore, an MEP from the 5 Star Movement, expressed concern over the repeated attacks on the Riuniti hospital in Foggia targeting doctors and healthcare personnel. He stressed that legal investigations, not aggression, should manage medical malpractice and support healthcare professionals.
What Led to the violent assault at Foggia’s Riuniti Hospital?
Recently, a tragic incident at the Riuniti Hospital in Foggia has led to a fierce outburst from the family and friends of a 23-year-old woman from Cerignola, who expired during surgery. The young woman had been affected in a scooter accident weeks earlier and succumbed to her injuries during the operation.
In reaction to her death, approximately fifty people, including her family, stormed the hospital, thrashing medical staff. The attack left several healthcare workers wounded, with one surgeon suffering facial wounds and a doctor sustaining a hand fracture.
What legal actions are being taken following the hospital assault?
The hospital’s management has undertaken an internal investigation to evaluate the medical care provided. The incident has flared national outrage, prompting calls from political and union leaders for critical measures to ensure the safety of healthcare professionals.
MEP Mario Furore urged that Minister of Health Orazio Schillaci should intervene to ensure both the safety of the staff and the care of the patients at the health institute. Furore described these ongoing attacks as unacceptable and akin to conditions in the Third World, calling for an end to such violence.
What role will the judiciary play in the investigation of medical malpractice?
MEP Furore also noted that an investigation has been initiated by the judiciary to determine the circumstances surrounding the recent death of a 23-year-old woman. The courts will seek to uncover the truth and assess whether the situation involved serious medical malpractice, as alleged by the woman’s sister. He emphasized that in a civilized society, such issues should be addressed through legal and procedural means rather than through physical aggression, intimidation, and threats towards doctors and nurses, who are among the most pressured professionals and require substantial state support.
