Rome (The Brussels Morning Newspaper) – MEP Carolina Morace criticises Minister Sangiuliano for dishonouring his position, causing international embarrassment for Italy.
Carolina Morace, MEP for the 5 Star Movement, expressed in a note that the Sangiuliano case is gaining international attention. She contended that the event brought Italy into the spotlight once again due to the actions of a member of the Meloni government.
Why is MEP Carolina Morace criticizing Minister Sangiuliano?
Italy’s culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano became caught up in the disgrace last month after a woman named Maria Rosaria Boccia began posting photos on social media sites of her with the minister on various public occasions, as well as emails and plane boarding passes. She did that after the culture ministry had rejected her public declarations that it had hired her as a special adviser.
How did Minister Sangiuliano admit to the relationship with Boccia?
The affair pushed Sangiuliano to admit in a long discussion on state television that his liaison with Boccia “had become a sentimental relationship” in May. The opposition challenged the role, asking whether she was benefiting from public funds and had access to secret documents relating to a meeting of G7 culture ministers planned for this month.
“The first person I have to apologise to is an exceptional individual, my wife. Then I apologise to Giorgia Meloni, who charged me, for embarrassing her and the government,” Sangiuliano said. He stated that Meloni had rejected his offer to leave. Sangiuliano said his friendship with the younger Boccia, who he encountered at a party in Naples in May, had turned into a “sentimental connection”, which was broken off between the end of July and the beginning of August.
Why does Morace believe this scandal damages Italy’s reputation?
According to Carolina Morace, many foreign media outlets have already covered the story of Minister Sangiuliano’s television appearance, where he admitted to attempting to hire his lover.
Morace indicated that this incident sends a harmful message to women, reinforcing their objectification in Italy. She attributed this issue to the right-wing government’s culture. She questioned what further events would prompt Meloni to accept the Minister’s resignation, citing that Sangiuliano had failed to uphold the discipline and honour required by Article 54 of the Constitution.
In her view, this case demonstrates his betrayal of the oath he took, making him unworthy of his position, and now, Morace added, the whole world is aware of the situation and is mocking Italy.
