Kortrijk (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Kortrijk will hold its first Short Track Race on October 2, 2025, at Worldkarts Kortrijk, featuring youth, women, and men categories. Alderman Wouter Allijns supports the city’s growing cycling culture.
As VRT News reported, Kortrijk will launch its new Short Track Race on October 2, 2025. The event takes place on an indoor karting track with many turns and few straight sections. Riders will race for 20 minutes to complete as many laps as possible within the time limit. The main prize goes to the cyclist with the highest lap count. Another award will be given for the fastest lap of the day.
What makes Kortrijk’s karting track ideal for the short track race?
Gregory Laporte of Worldkarts says the track suits cyclists who handle corners well and keep speed through bends. Winning will need control and accuracy as much as speed. The track, featuring sharp bends and short straights, will be modified for safety, with riders expected to use the bridge instead of the low underpass.
“We want to boost the cycling vibe a bit more and get as many Kortrijk residents as possible enthusiastic about cycling.”
Wouter Allijns, Alderman for Sports (Team Mayor City List Kortrijk)
Organisers say the underpass is suitable for karts but poses a height risk for cyclists, even with helmets. Alderman for Sports Wouter Allijns (Team Mayor Stadslijst Kortrijk) said the race shows the strong cycling culture in Kortrijk, seen in village centres, major classic races, and now on a karting track. He mentioned that the event is open to all and will have 3 categories: youth aged 12 to 15, women, and men. Each category will be divided into groups by skill level.
Worldkarts Kortrijk is a well-known indoor karting track in West Flanders, Belgium, that hosts both professional and leisure races. In recent years, it has also been used for cycling events to help promote the sport in the area. The circuit was redesigned in September 2015 to improve the layout.
In 2016, new karts with stronger engines were added, and in 2017, the track was expanded with a section under the bridge. The venue has hosted major events, including the Kart World Championship in 2008 and 2023. It is now adding cycling to its program with the Short Track Race.
