UK (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Jimmy Kimmel sparked controversy on Channel 4’s 2025 Alternative Christmas Message, criticising the U.S. and Trump. Tom Bevan called him “insufferable,” drawing debate in the U.K. and U.S. on Christmas Day.

As Fox News reported, Jimmy Kimmel, the American late-night host, has sparked controversy after delivering Channel 4’s annual “Alternative Christmas Message” in the United Kingdom. The program is broadcast as a counterpoint to the BBC’s traditional Royal Christmas Message.

Kimmel used his speech to criticise the United States and focus on domestic political issues. He repeatedly targeted former President Donald Trump. The message aired on Christmas Day, a time usually reserved for festive and unifying speeches.

What sparked backlash over Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Tyranny’ comment in UK speech?

In his speech, Kimmel made pointed remarks about American politics. He said,

“Tyranny is booming over here in the U.S.”

He also apologised on behalf of Americans, saying,

“We are not bright. We’re Americans.”

The response in the United States was immediate. Critics called Kimmel’s speech extreme and harsh. Tom Bevan, co-founder of RealClearPolitics, described the host as “insufferable” and said the remarks were contradictory. Supporters said the Alternative Christmas Message often features outspoken voices, and Kimmel’s approach reflected that.

The Alternative Christmas Message from Channel 4 was initiated in 1993 as a response to the BBC’s Royal Christmas Message. These are typically political, social and cultural points of view expressed in their speeches. The presenter of the Christmas Message for 2025 will be Jimmy Kimmel.
