Rome (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – On Thursday, Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto announced that Italy has sent a second navy ship to support the international aid flotilla, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, which came under a drone attack while attempting to deliver aid to Gaza.

“We have sent one ship and another is on its way, ready for any eventuality,”

Crosetto said in a speech to the lower house of parliament.

What is the Global Sumud Flotilla’s main objective?

The Global Sumud Flotilla is an international civilian maritime initiative launched in mid-2025 to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza. It consists of about 50 civilian vessels carrying thousands of participants from more than 44 countries, including lawyers, activists, doctors, and artists. Among the notable participants are Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and other prominent figures from civil society.

Why has Italy deployed two navy ships to the flotilla?

Italy dispatched its first frigate on Wednesday to assist and protect the Global Sumud Flotilla. Additionally, Spain has chosen to dispatch a military warship to safeguard the flotilla.

It came shortly after the GSF announced it was targeted by drones equipped with stun grenades and itching powder, in international waters 30 nautical miles (56 km) from the Greek island of Gavdos.

The GSF accused Israel of being responsible for the attack. Early Thursday, the GSF reported that its vessels were moving slowly in Greek territorial waters, experienced “moderate drone activity” overnight, and were expected to reach international waters “later today.”

How did Israel respond to accusations over the drone attack?

The Israeli authorities did not directly respond to the accusation but restated their call for the flotilla to deliver humanitarian assistance to an Israeli port. From there, Israeli authorities would transmit it to Gaza, or face consequences.

What alternative proposal has Italy suggested for aid delivery?

Italian defence minister Crosetto advised the activists not to insist on breaking the Israeli blockade, instead urging them to accept an Italian proposal to transfer their aid supplies so they can be distributed in Gaza through the local Catholic Church.

“We cannot guarantee the safety of our fellow citizens if they enter the territorial waters of other countries,”

Crosetto said.
