Iran and the United States have begun a second round of indirect nuclear talks in Italy’s capital, Rome. Indirect talks on Iran’s nuclear program occurred in Muscat, Oman, on April 12. Led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US Special Representative for Middle East Affairs, Steve Winkoff, the discussions were deemed constructive and underscored mutual respect. The subsequent round of talks is scheduled for today in Rome.

“I received the Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi and encouraged him to continue on the path of negotiations against nuclear weapons. The Italian Government hopes that together we can reach a positive solution for the Middle East,”

Tajani said in a post on X.

Will Rome talks ease nuclear tensions?

As reported by Iranian media, Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi said that a reasonable agreement on Iran’s nuclear program could benefit all parties involved. During a meeting in Rome with his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani, Araghchi highlighted that a nuclear agreement with Iran could generate mutually beneficial outcomes for all involved parties.

He mentioned that Iran is willing to willingly resolve any concerns about its peaceful nuclear program by eliminating unilateral sanctions and fostering trust. Araghchi emphasised that Iran’s nuclear program serves peaceful purposes, asserting that, in line with its values and defense doctrine, the nation deems weapons of mass destruction intolerable.

At the meeting, the Italian minister emphasised the importance of facilitating discussions between the United States and Iran for Italy. He remarked,

“Italy is interested in strengthening relations between the two countries and is ready to offer any assistance to ensure the success of the negotiations between Iran and the US.”

Discussions between the US and Iran began last Saturday in Oman and are ongoing today at the Omani ambassador’s residence in Rome.
