Israeli Flag Row Sparks Fierce EU Parliament Clash, Strasbourg

Strasbourg, 7 October, (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – An Israeli flag row has triggered a heated political dispute inside the European Parliament after French MEP Rima Hassan removed an Israeli flag from an exhibition commemorating victims of the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attacks on Israel.

The incident, which took place during Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, prompted European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to intervene. She said the institution was treating the matter “extremely seriously” and confirmed that parliamentary procedures were being followed.

Hassan, a French-Palestinian MEP representing La France Insoumise and sitting with The Left group in the European Parliament, has acknowledged deliberately removing the Israeli flag. However, her office has disputed parts of the account surrounding the incident, including suggestions that flags were deliberately damaged.

Flag removal triggers dispute inside EU Parliament

The controversy centres on an exhibition marking the 7 October attacks, when Hamas-led militants attacked communities in southern Israel and took hostages, triggering the war that followed in Gaza.

Israeli artist Yaron Bob was involved in the exhibition. Hassan challenged the display and subsequently removed the Israeli flag from its stand.

According to Hassan’s office, the EU flag was connected to the same structure and fell after the Israeli flag was removed, causing the stand to become unbalanced.

Her office said: “No flag was stepped on or damaged.”

The distinction has become significant because the dispute now concerns not only Hassan’s political protest but also whether her actions breached standards governing conduct and property inside Parliament.

Metsola delivers strong response over Strasbourg incident

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola addressed the controversy during the plenary session and confirmed that officials were examining what happened.

“We take this extremely seriously,” Metsola said.

She said the MEP involved would have the opportunity to present her account as part of the institution’s procedures.

Metsola also stressed that Parliament must remain a place where disagreements are handled through political debate rather than intimidation or damage to property.

Her intervention has elevated the Israeli flag row from an individual protest into an institutional issue concerning parliamentary conduct.

Rima Hassan defends flag removal as political protest

Hassan has defended her action as a political protest connected to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and the European Union’s approach to the conflict.

She has accused European institutions of applying double standards over Israel and international law and criticised Israeli diplomatic participation in the exhibition.

Her position reflects wider divisions within the European Parliament, where lawmakers have repeatedly clashed over Gaza, Israel’s security, humanitarian conditions and the EU’s diplomatic response.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar strongly condemned Hassan’s actions, describing the incident as “shameful” and “outrageous”.

October 7 anniversary intensifies political tensions

The timing has made the controversy particularly sensitive.

The dispute emerged as Europe marked three years since the 7 October 2023 attacks, giving the exhibition and its symbolism additional political significance.

The European Parliament has faced sustained disagreement among its political groups over the Gaza war, Israeli policy, Palestinian rights, antisemitism and the EU’s relationship with Israel.

The latest confrontation demonstrates how those divisions continue to influence debate inside one of the EU’s most important institutions.

Why the flag controversy matters for Brussels

Although the incident occurred at Parliament’s Strasbourg seat, its political consequences extend directly to Brussels, where much of the European Parliament’s committee, political group and institutional work takes place.

The dispute raises questions about how Parliament balances freedom of political expression with its internal rules governing demonstrations, conduct and institutional property.

It also comes amid heightened concern about antisemitism across Europe and continuing political arguments over the humanitarian and security consequences of the Israel-Gaza conflict.

What happens next in the European Parliament?

European Parliament authorities are expected to complete their examination of the incident before determining whether further disciplinary action is warranted.

Hassan has the right to provide her version of events before any final decision is taken.

Under Parliament’s rules, disciplinary measures can range from a reprimand to restrictions on parliamentary activities or financial penalties, depending on the circumstances and seriousness of an infringement.

No final sanction had been announced at the time of publication.

The Israeli flag row is therefore likely to remain under scrutiny as Parliament determines whether Hassan’s protest crossed the boundary between political expression and conduct subject to disciplinary action.
