Berlin (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – German interior and foreign ministries spokespeople said they are in consultations regarding sending a country contingent to the European Union’s civilian mission to monitor the border crossing between Gaza and Egypt at Rafah.
“We are in good consultations with the foreign ministry,”
stated an interior ministry spokesperson at a news conference.
“These missions always start with a ramp-up to see how great the need is and how many people are required,”
said ed the spokesperson.
The foreign ministry spokesperson expressed general requirements and ensuring the contingent would be stationed safely had to be taken into concern.
What role will the EU mission play in Gaza?
The European Union announced a restart of the civilian monitoring mission on the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, according to its foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, on 27 January 2025. This is the EU’s latest attempt at facilitating the safe passage of humanitarian aid and medical evacuations from Gaza through supporting the current ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.
The civilian mission is set to maintain the observation of crossing at the border so that the safe movement of goods and persons is ensured. It will make the evacuation of the casualties from Gaza to receive medical care easier and assist in managing the influx of humanitarian supplies into the area.
The mission is set to begin its operations in early February 2025 following the achievement of a deal, which the parties concerned were helped to arrive at by Egypt, Israel, and the Palestinian Authority. It will first operate under a charter that is set to expire on June 30, 2025. It established the European Union Border Assistance Mission in 2005. In 2007, however, it was suspended as Hamas took control over Gaza. The redeployment is a renewed commitment to stabilize the region amid humanitarian crises.
