Genk (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Much of Limburg, including Genk, woke to fresh snow; families enjoyed sledding at Schemmerberg-Zonhoverheide and Waterschei mine spoil tip, while authorities warned of icy roads.

As VRT News reported, this morning, Jan 3, 2025, much of Limburg covered in fresh snow after snowfall yesterday, Jan 2, 2025, and overnight. In Genk, children and parents went outside to sled, build snowmen, and play in the snow.

What areas in Limburg saw families sledding after fresh snowfall?

The snow stayed longest in the north and east of the province. In Genk, the Schemmerberg-Zonhoverheide area became popular with families early in the morning. People from surrounding neighbourhoods arrived, some with makeshift sleds.

“It’s been a while since we’ve seen such a blanket of snow. We were afraid the snow would melt, so we got up early to go sledding,”

A mother said.

Many people gathered at the Waterschei mine spoil tip in Genk to enjoy the fresh snowfall. Families, friends, and visitors from nearby areas all took part.

“The road here is still completely white. It’s slippery. You really have to pay attention.”

Drivers from farther away warned that the roads to the Waterschei slag heap were icy. Authorities also advise caution on streets and main roads because of the ongoing snow. The snow cover remains for now.

Limburg has experienced an influx of snowfall over the past few years that has become popular among families visiting the local mountains. In January 2023, thick snow covered towns, including Genk, attracting families and children to sled at the Waterschei mine spoil tip and nearby hills. Neighbours of the area travelled to the area.
