European Parliament hosts Torino 2025 torch relay launch

Brussels (The Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Torch Relay of the Torino 2025 FISU World University Games winter reaches Brussels. 

The Torino 2025 FISU World University Games Winter is being launched with the opening of the international Torch Relay. The torch came to Brussels on Monday 23 September 2024 at the European Parliament.  

It was welcomed by Vice-President, Sabine Verheyen, at the start of the European Week of Sport #BEACTIVE. The European Commission endeavours to encourage sport and physical activity by expanding public awareness of the importance of an active lifestyle for all.  Also, the Spanish hockey player Marina Gancedo was an attendee at the meeting. 

What are the stages of the World University Games Flame Relay?

The protocol of the World University Games Flame Relay, developed under the banner of sustainability, is divided into three stages: International, National and Piemontese. The phases will be held on university campuses and in places of cultural and touristic interest.

The Torch Relay stage was formed thanks to the valuable cooperation of theEucA (European University College Association), the Committee’s partner in facilitating the event and the values of sport via its network of universities and colleges. 

Where will the torch relay travel after Brussels?

Moreover, the relay of the international phase, which began in Brussels, will continue in Rabat, Morocco, where Torino and Rhein-Ruhr (host of the FISU Games Summer 2025) will commemorate the passing of the torch at the FISU Executive Committee on 26 and 27 September. The torch will then return to Italy, departing from FISU to FederCUSI in Rome, where a virtual flash mob will be arranged with all the national University Sport Centres (CUS), represented by 20 student-athletes and ex-torchbearers from all over the country. 

What is the significance of the torch relay’s stop in New York?

Furthermore, from Rome, the torch will be lit in New York on 14 October to take part in the Columbus Day march with the Italian Government and the representatives of Piemont’s Region. The institutional visits of the Torchlight will then continue with the Lausanne date scheduled for 22 October at the University and the headquarters of the International University Sports Federation FISU. 

The tour will come to Italy with stays in Trento on 29 October, Milan on 4 November and Caivano and Salerno on 8 and 9 November, before going to the main university platforms in Piemonte in November and the host venues in December. Finally, on 13 January 2025, the Torch will return to Turin for the Opening Ceremony that will keep the beginning of the XXXII FISU World University Games Winter.
