Strasbourg (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – EU Parliament finalized its recommendations for the European Union’s position on the UN global gathering on women’s rights to be held in New York in March 2025.

Before the 69th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, the European Parliament calls for European Union leadership to gain equal opportunities for women in every scope of life, including by enforcing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on gender equality.

Members of the European Parliament urged the European Union to ensure its adherence to the Declaration and Platform, which they define as an “international ‘Bill of Rights’ for women”. They denounced “all attempts to roll back, refuse or remove existing safeguards for gender equality” in light of growing influential anti-rights campaigns. MEPs also expressed the EU must back partner nations in addressing gender prejudice, and lead by example in advancing equality, guaranteeing that the rights of women and girls are a foundation of the EU’s external action.

To guarantee equal prospects in all scopes of life, MEPs urged gender budgeting and gender mainstreaming in all applicable EU policy dimensions and the enhanced collection of gender-disaggregated equality data.

MEPs expressed greater measures to fight gender-based violence are required, be it online, offline, physical, psychological domestic, sexual or economic. They also noted the significant effect of online gender-based abuse on women’s mental health and persist to push for a consent-based description of rape to be publicised as a universal measure across the EU.
