EU lowers flags for victims in Magdeburg, Mayotte, Zagreb

Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – EU institutions are lowering flags to half mast in respect of the recent tragedies in Magdeburg, Mayotte and Zagreb.

The European Union institutions in Brussels lowered the flags of the European Union, France, Germany, and Croatia to half-mast in respect of the victims of the recent episodes in Magdeburg, Mayotte and Zagreb.

“We stand in solidarity with the victims,” said European Parliament President Roberta Metsola on X, publishing a message of solidarity in German, French, and Croatian.

There was a horrifying incident in the German town of Magdeburg when one car went into the Christmas market on 21st December 2024. Five people have died as a result of this incident. The victims include a nine-year-old boy identified as André Gleißner. Besides that, more than 200 took critical injuries, and a minimum of 41 reports are being kept in critical condition.

In France, Cyclone Chido hit the French territory of the Indian Ocean, Mayotte, on December 14, 2024. The aftermath had left a heavy toll on life and much destruction. At least 31 confirmed fatalities have been reported as of December 19. The authorities believe that it might be even in the hundreds, with thousands unaccounted for from the aftermath of the cyclone.

Recently, in Zagreb, Croatia, a seven-year-old child was stabbed to death and many others were injured in a stabbing spree at Precko Elementary School on December 20, 2024. A 19-year-old male entered the school premises and attacked the children and a teacher alike in the attack. The suspect had attended school as a former student. The police arrested him at the scene.
