EU leaders congratulated Trump on election victory

Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Reactions from European Union leaders rushed in as Donald Trump took to the stage in Florida to declare election victory after securing almost sufficient electoral votes to defeat his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris.

President of the European Council Charles Michel congratulated Donald Trump on his election victory. “The EU and the US have an enduring partnership and a historic bond. As allies and friends, the EU looks forward to persisting our constructive cooperation. The EU will pursue its course in line with the strategic plan as a strong, united, competitive and sovereign partner while defending the rules-based multilateral system,” Michel expressed on X.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also “warmly” congratulated Trump on X, adding that the US and the EU were “more than just allies” and dedicated to working with the potential president.

According to a press release by the EU Commission, Ursula also said: “I warmly congratulate Donald J. Trump on his election as the 47th President of the United States of America. I look forward to working with President Trump again to advance a strong transatlantic agenda. The European Union and the United States are more than just allies. We are bound by a true partnership between our people, uniting 800 million citizens. This bond runs deep, rooted in our shared history, commitment to freedom and democracy, and common goals of security and opportunity for all.”

Moreover, the President of the European Parliament Robert Metsola said: “Congratulations to Donald Trump on his electoral victory in the United States. Europe is ready. To cooperate as we address unprecedented geopolitical challenges. To keep the transatlantic bond strong, rooted in our shared values of freedom, human rights, democracy & open markets”.

Surprisingly, the Current holder of the European Council rotating presidency Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was the first to congratulate Trump on “the biggest comeback in US political history,” calling it “a much-needed success for the world” in a post on X.
