Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Macron proposes a path to resolve the Ukraine conflict, balancing Ukraine’s sovereignty and European security, ahead of Trump’s presidency.
French President Emmanuel Macron on 12 Dec 2024 proposed a “path” out of the Ukraine battle that takes into account the interests of Ukraine and the European Union as incoming US president Donald Trump readies to take office.
Emmanuel Macron expressed during a visit to Warsaw, days after he sat in Paris with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Trump, who has stated that solving the Ukraine problem would be his top preference. “The Trump administration has shown its willingness to try to turn the course of this dispute and so we require to work closely with the Americans, with Ukraine of course, to discover a possible route that takes into account the interests of Ukraine, its sovereignty and the interests of the Europeans and their security,” Macron briefed reporters in Warsaw.
Poland has been a persistent supporter of neighbouring Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022 and operates as a critical logistics hub for Western military assistance to Kyiv. The EU and NATO members have been debating Ukraine with various foreign officials as it set to take over the rotating presidency of the European Council next month.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that peace discussions on ending the Ukraine war could start “in the winter of this year”. “Our (EU) presidency will notably be co-responsible for what the political terrain will look like, maybe how the situation will be examined during negotiations,” he stated.
