Wielsbeke (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – In August 2023, a man in his sixties caused a fatal crash in Wielsbeke, killing a 15-year-old girl. Now, he got jail for 6 months, a €4,000 fine, and a 1-year driving ban.

The man who caused the accident in Wielsbeke, a municipality in the province of West Flanders, Belgium, where a 15-year-old girl died and her mother and another girl were badly injured, was sent to jail for 6 months. He also has to pay €4,000 fine and can’t drive for 1 year.

The court mentioned that the man wasn’t paying attention when he crashed. He said he might have passed out because of the hot weather, but there was no proof. The judge decided that the man wasn’t paying attention while driving, and that’s why the accident happened.

Was driver’s inattention to blame for fatal Wielsbeke crash?

According to the officials, the driver has to see a doctor to make sure he’s okay to drive again. Then, he has to pass both the driving theory and the practical test before he can get his license back. Even though there’s no proof he fell asleep or passed out, the court still thinks he wasn’t careful enough.

An accident took place in Wielsbeke at the end of August 2023 at the Ooigemstraat-Vierlindenstraat junction. A driver, a man driving his van, took the wrong direction and collided with a bus shelter where a girl of 15 years, with her mother, and another girl were waiting to board the bus. The mother of the teenager underwent 17 surgeries, but she has still not fully recovered from the trauma.
