Mechelen (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): On 18July in Mechelen police checked 87 drivers for intoxication finding none. A suspicious 23-year-old from Brussels was discovered without a license and a fake identity leading to his car being seized.

On 18 July the cops checked for drunk drivers on Postzegellaan in Mechelen close to the station. They tested 87 drivers but none of them were driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. One driver stood out to the cops because he parked his car a bit away from the checkpoint and stayed inside. The police thought his behavior was odd so they decided to check on him too.

What happened when police encountered a suspicious driver in Mechelen?

The police guy Dirk Van de Sande shared a story from the alcohol check on Postzegellaan. He said the officers got confused at first. When they went up to the strange driver he said he forgot his license and ID. He even gave a fake address and a made-up name. This made the cops even more suspicious so they dug deeper into his story. Turns out when the police looked in the guy’s car they found his wallet with his real ID inside. It ha been said that he was actually a 23-year-old dude from Brussels. Finding his true identity explained why he was acting all shady near the checkpoint. The cops now knew who he really was and could deal with any trouble for him lying before.

The guy from Brussels who’s 23 doesn’t have a proper address because he’s been struck off officially. This added more confusion to the whole situation.Things got even messier. The guy was actually flagged in two files and had some conditions on his pre-trial detention. This means he was already in legal trouble with specific rules about his detention. He wasn’t just forgetting his driver’s license he never had one to begin with. He was trying to trick the cops and he’s in even deeper trouble with the law. It turns out this guy had a history of breaking driving laws. Different police zones had fined him multiple times for driving without a license. Because he kept ignoring the rules the Mechelen police took action. They seized his car to stop him from driving illegally and to make sure he couldn’t pose a danger to others on the road.
