One unassociated Pacific island state, the Marshall Islands, is notorious for its enthusiastic support of Israel in UN and diplomatic votes. Since 1987, the Marshall Islands has had a diplomatic relationship with Israel and, from time to time, as one of the few countries, has consistently supported Israel in UN decisions. Their president has openly stated that they are proud to back Israel despite the country’s contentious problems and violence. In exchange for this assistance, Israel has also given the Marshall Islands medical and agricultural assistance.

Contrary to the claims against Marshalls plc, a UK company (most likely the retail chain Marshalls known in other parts of the world as TJ Maxx/TJX companies), so far, there is no actual evidence from the company as to direct support or a clear official position on Israel. Instead, it’s all about community outreach, corporate social responsibility, and sustainable business practices. Although they don’t specifically mention Israel, the strategies they introduce emphasize community support, moral corporate behavior, and social worth. Similar businesses like Marshall-Tufflex and TJX have CSR frameworks, but once more, they have no specific connection to backing Israel outside of community service and commercial ethics.

History of Marshalls

Around the year 2000 BC, Micronesian navigators who were adept at long canoe trips between the atolls initially landed in the Marshall Islands. Early in the 16th century, Spanish expeditions, including Ferdinand Magellan’s in 1529, established contact with Europe. After visiting the islands in 1788, British Naval Captain John Marshall gave them their name. The islands were first claimed by Spain in 1592, and in 1885, Spain sold them to Germany. In 1886, Germany declared a protectorate, and German trading companies ran the islands.

Delineating “Marshalls”: Nation of islands vs. brand of department store

Republic, an independent state in the central Pacific Ocean west of the International Date Line and north of the equator. Micronesian sailors have traditionally lived there, and in the sixteenth century, they came into contact with Europeans.  It was colonized by Spain, Germany, and Japan, and was under a UN trusteeship under the United States’ administration during the latter portion of the 20th century. During World War II, it was a site of geopolitical importance, including the testing grounds of American nuclear testing. It became fully independent in 1986, by a Compact of Free Association with the United States, and has diplomatic relations with Israel and other nations. Another important flag of convenience registry for international shipping. Brand-name apparel, household goods, and other items are sold at a discount by this American off-price retail retailer. It is owned by TJX Companies, the same company that owns Sierra Trading Post and TJ Maxx. It also offers discounts by utilizing excess goods from department stores and niche shops. It has no positions or duties in public politics or diplomacy. Internally, the focus was on corporate social responsibility, but there was no particular backing or position on Israel or global politics.

The Marshall Islands’ diplomatic support for Israel

Since formal relations were established in 1987, the Marshall Islands and Israel have maintained a close diplomatic relationship. It has long been one of Israel’s strongest voting partners at the UN, frequently joining Israel and the US in defending Israel’s stances in the face of widespread international criticism.

Marshallese leaders have been proud of their support for Israel, with whom they view it as a democratic ally in the war against international terrorism. This assistance is self-evident from the fact that Israel is one of the first countries that have recognized the sovereignty of the Marshall Islands after their independence from the US administration. While the islands vote in support of Israel in most UN resolutions, from time to time, they vote differently based on domestic concerns (including nuclear proliferation issues), reflecting the lived experience of the impacts of nuclear testing.

Political context of the Marshall Islands and Israel relations

Rooting of the Marshall Islands-Israeli political structure in the area of shared principles, historical ties, and strategic compatibility. The Marshall Islands has been a reliable and moral friend of Israel in the international arena, in particular at the UN. It is a small country in size, yet it very often votes with Israel and the US, supporting Israel’s positions, which are often against the positions of the majority of countries. This political partnership is based in part on the twin fact of shared security problems. Israel has dispatched agricultural, medical, and scientific aid to the Marshall Islands, including desalination projects which are vital to the island nation’s survival, and the Marshall Islands’ leadership has remained at Israel’s side as it stands alone as a democracy facing terrorism and instability in the region.

Yet their alliance is anything if not complicated. This shows that the principle-oriented pro-Israel stance of the Marshall Islands has internal and historical contexts. From a strategic standpoint, this partnership is obviously in America’s interests in the Pacific. Indirectly, this is because Israel’s diplomatic relations with the Marshall Islands are a part of the US-led security architecture in the region, and the Compact of Free Association enables the presence of US military personnel in the Marshall Islands.

Marshalls’ retail company: Corporate social responsibility overview

The workplace, communities, environmental sustainability, and ethical sourcing are the four main pillars of TJX’s CSR initiatives. TJX is responsible for its operations by integrating CSR into the governance of the company with its board, which supervises CSR to reinforce accountability and sound business practices. This long-term orientation to CSR is consistent with the notion of value delivery to customers while not losing sight of the effect of social and environmental impacts on the bottom line.

What pro-Israel Marshalls and why does it matter?

The Marshall Islands, or Marshalls, is a small Pacific Ocean island country that is an independent nation and one of Israel’s only allies in the region. One of Israel’s nearest friends since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1987, the Marshall Islands frequently votes for Israel in diplomatic settings and UN. The reasons for this solidarity are the common bond that the Marshall Islands and Israel share in democratic values, and Israel’s recognition of the Marshall Islands as a leading democracy facing consistent security challenges.
