Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Delhaize acquires Delfood, adding 325 Louis Delhaize stores in Belgium. CEO Xavier Piesvaux aims to strengthen its market presence by 2025.

Delhaize will buy Delfood, a wholesaler that supplies 325 stores in Belgium. Most of these stores are called Louis Delhaize. This deal will help Delhaize grow its business and strengthen its position. The purchase includes the stores, logistics services, and Delfood’s headquarters.

Delhaize plans to use its expertise in food to help the Louis Delhaize stores and partner stores improve. CEO Xavier Piesvaux said they would work with Delfood’s skilled employees to find new growth. The Louis Delhaize brand will stay the same after the deal.

Will Delhaize’s acquisition of Delfood expand its Belgian stores?

Delfood will keep its management and workers to ensure smooth operations. Contracts with partner stores will remain in place.  Delhaize believes it can help the Louis Delhaize stores grow.

Acquisitions need approval from the Belgian Competition Authority. Delhaize wants to complete the deal by the end of 2025. This move comes after the Louis Delhaize Group made other changes. They sold their business in France to Carrefour and some stores in Belgium to Colruyt. These actions are part of their plan to focus on their main activities.

“Delhaize wants to make its expertise in food and fresh products available to Louis Delhaize”,

Says the CEO of Delhaize, Xavier Piesvaux.

“We want to further develop the potential of Louis Delhaize stores and independent partner stores, together with the experienced employees.”

Delhaize and Delfood are working on the steps needed for Delfood’s takeover. This will increase Delhaize’s store network in Belgium. Both companies come from the same family and started over 150 years ago.

Since then, they have grown separately. The details of the deal will not be shared until the Belgian Competition Authority approves it. This takeover could add 325 new stores to Delhaize’s current 808 stores in Belgium and Luxembourg. If it gets approval, Delhaize wants to include these new stores by the end of 2025.

Xavier Piesvaux, the CEO of Delhaize, said,

“This deal is important because it unites two companies from the same founding family. This is a big moment in their history.”

It has been said that if the takeover is approved, Delhaize will have a bigger presence in Belgium. This will help Delhaize strengthen its position, especially in the convenience store market where Delfood works. The management team and employees of Delfood will stay, and contracts with related stores will continue. Delhaize can find more opportunities in the Louis Delhaize stores and the network of partner stores. They also want to support growth and success with the experienced team from Delfood.
