Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The European Commission has allocated €148 million in new funding to fund vital humanitarian assistance in both Ukraine and Moldova.

As reported by the press of the Commission, €140 million is assigned for humanitarian projects in Ukraine. The grant will be directed towards emergency aid, including shelter, food, clean healthcare, water and winter protection. Essential priorities are helping vulnerable populations in the laboriously war-impacted areas of eastern and southern Ukraine.

Also, €8 million is assigned for humanitarian tasks in Moldova. Support will concentrate on helping Ukrainian refugees and Moldovan host communities, focusing on cash aid access to essential services like education, healthcare and psychosocial support.

EU Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality Hadja Lahbib has arrived in Ukraine to support the EU’s ongoing struggles to deliver critical assistance. Before arriving in Kyiv, Lahbib had already been to the EU Medevac seat in Rzeszów, which helps the Civil Protection Mechanism with medical evacuations of severely sick patients from Ukraine and neighboring nations.

What are the EU’s priorities for aid in Ukraine?

As of January 2025, the sum of aid channeled through the European Union and its member states to Ukraine reached nearly €118 billion, equivalent to around $131 billion since February 2022, when the war began. According to Valdis Dombrovskis, vice president of the EU Commission, €43.5 billion has been allocated in this period to fund military assistance alone. The support by the EU involves a range of forms of assistance: humanitarian, financial, and military resources for defense against the aggressions by Russia.

On the other hand, it will also be training Ukrainian soldiers and increasing the troops on EU territory up to a minimum of 75,000 by the end of winter with an aim to have an additional 15,000 troops trained. This all-around help generally depicts the unrelenting commitment by the EU to helping Ukraine in its quest for sovereignty and stability amid conflict.
