Deinze (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Deinze starts building a new cycling and walking bridge in Sint-Martinus Park on August 4, 2025. Mayor Rutger De Reu supports the project, ending spring 2026; the naming open till August 31, 2025.

A VRT News reported, this summer, Deinze, in the province of East Flanders, Belgium,  will start building a new bridge for cyclists and walkers over the old Leie arm in Sint-Martinus Park. The plan was made by the last city council to give people a safer and quicker way to travel between Petegem and the city centre. Right now, they have to use Kortrijkstraat. The new bridge will let them cross the river inside the park and go straight to the Brielpoortbrug.

What will the new bike bridge in Deinze be called?

Mayor Rutger De Reu (CD&V) explained that the new bridge represents an important step towards safe and environmentally friendly travel. Citizens on foot or by bike no longer need to drive through busy roads to reach the city centre. Rather, they can ride through the park on a quiet and green route. He added that the bridge is part of a bigger plan to promote cycling and walking, and to encourage less car use.

The city of Deinze will start building a new bike and walking bridge after the construction break, on August 4th, 2025. The work will go on until the spring of 2026. The bridge will go over the old Leie arm in Sint-Martinus Park and will give a safe and direct path between Petegem and the city centre.

Because the work takes place in a closed part of the park, the city says there will be little trouble for people using the park or nearby roads. Most people will not notice much change. Only the fishermen who often fish by the water may have some problems. But the city plans to take steps so that fishing can still happen during the workday.

Along with building the new bridge, the city of Deinze is asking people to help pick a name for it. The bridge does not have a name yet, and all residents can send in their ideas. People can give their suggestions until August 31st, 2025, by using the city’s official website.
