Ghent (Brussels Morning Newspaper): A woman on a bicycle was critically injured by a De Lin bus at Palinghuizen crossing in Ghent. She was later declared brain dead, the driver was not at fault.

An accident occurred at the Palinghuizen crossing near the Western Cemetery in Ghent. A woman on a bicycle was struck by a De Lijn bus traveling towards Gentbrugge. Initial reports indicate she did not see the bus while attempting to cross the road. The collision was severe, and she was quickly taken to the hospital in critical condition.

What factors contributed to the fatal bicycle accident involving a De Lin Bus in Ghent?

Despite urgent medical care, the woman’s injuries were too serious, and she was declared brain dead later in the afternoon. The accident has shocked the local community and raised concerns about cyclist safety in busy traffic areas. Authorities are likely to continue looking into the details of the collision.

The bus driver involved in the accident was upset by what happened. After the crash, the public prosecutor’s office did tests and found no alcohol in the driver’s system. They also confirmed that the bus was not going too fast during the accident, and no other injuries were reported. Since there were enough witnesses, the public prosecutor decided not to hire a traffic expert to investigate further.

Because of the accident, the intersection at Palinghuizen was partly closed so emergency services could help and look into what happened. This also affected public transport, with three De Lijn bus stops in the area being out of service.
