Costa discusses regional ties with Kazakhstan’s president

Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – European Council President António Costa held a telephone conversation with the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. He discussed the opportunities for regional cooperation and supporting energy partnerships.

European Council President, in a post on X, expressed,

“In my phone call with the President of Kazakhstan, I expressed our appreciation for the strategic cooperation we have established together. Kazakhstan is an important partner of the EU, and we will continue to strengthen trade and connectivity links.

I commended Kazakhstan’s principled stance in supporting a rules-based international order. We agreed to continue cooperating closely in support of multilateralism, territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of conflicts.

I look forward to our discussions in Samarkand during the first-ever EU-Central Asia Summit in April.”

What did António Costa discuss with Kazakhstan’s president?

During the conversation, they addressed current problems and prospects for improving cooperation between Kazakhstan and the European Union.

The president of Kazakhstan expressed that European Union relations have seen some positive developments, expressly in the context of the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, assigning great importance to the prospect of moving forward in the spheres of trade, investment, energy, transport and logistics, sustainable development, and digital transformation. 

What are the main goals of the EU-Central Asia summit?

The first-ever summit of the EU and Central Asia will take place in April 2025 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The summit is a unique opportunity for furthering ties between the EU and Central Asian countries. Priority areas of discussion will include connectivity, security issues, including counter-terrorism, political developments such as regional cooperation, climate change mitigation strategies, and economic partnerships.
