Brussels (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): A vehicle fire in a tunnel caused smoke but everyone escaped safely. Authorities thoroughly checked the tunnel’s systems confirmed safety and reopened it on 14th August at 5:30 pm after repairs.

On 12th August Monday around noon a vehicle caught fire inside a tunnel causing a lot of smoke. Emergency responders quickly controlled the fire but the thick smoke was a serious danger. Everyone in the vehicle got out safely and no one was hurt in the incident. The fire caused a lot of damage to the tunnel so there is an urgent need to check and fix it. They need to carefully assess the damage to make sure the tunnel is safe and strong. Authorities are working to get the tunnel back in working order as soon as they can making the necessary repairs to avoid similar problems in the future.

What safety checks were conducted before reopening the tunnel?

Steven Fierens a spokesperson for Brussels Mobility confirmed that the tunnel has been carefully checked to make sure it is safe before reopening to traffic. These checks included thorough evaluations of important systems like lighting, ventilation and emergency features. Each part was carefully tested to ensure it works well and meets safety standards. Besides checking individual systems, the overall systems in the tunnel were also checked for reliability. This included making sure that traffic management systems, fire safety systems and automated safety features were all working properly. Since everything has been confirmed to work correctly and meet safety standards the tunnel is considered safe for public use and will be reopened for traffic.

After all the safety checks and tests the tunnel is now approved to reopen to traffic on 14th August at around 5:30 p.m. This means that since everything has been thoroughly checked and confirmed to work well the authorities believe the tunnel is safe for public use. Traffic will be allowed to go through the tunnel starting at 5:30 p.m. so commuters and vehicles can use this route again as planned. The decision to reopen at this time shows careful planning to ensure a smooth and safe return to normal operations.
