Brussels society celebrates bloom of world’s largest Titan Arum

Brussels (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): At Plantentuin Meise in Belgium the world’s largest flowering plant Titan Arum has blossomed and broken a new Guinness World Record for its height at 322.5 cm. This plant smells bad to attract pollinators.

The titan arum which is the world’s biggest flowering plant has bloomed several times at the Plantentuin Meise. The latest blooming, which started this week at the botanical garden on the 20th is extra special because it’s the largest one in the world.

Is the Titan Arum in Meise the largest flower ever recorded?

According to the resources this gigantic arum of the Botanical Garden is the tallest ever recorded and cultivated. Currently it measures 322.5 centimeters in height. Meise is going to apply for the Guinness World Record for having the biggest titan arum said Manon van Hoe a spokesperson of the Botanical Garden. On Tuesday morning it was measured officially its size. The previous record was held by a plant in Gilford United States measuring 3 meters and 10 centimeters since 2010. The first Guinness World Record was set by a plant in the Botanical Garden in Bonn in 2003 which measured 3 meters and 6 centimeters.

 The titan arum found only hang in Sumatra within country’s borders is known as corpse flower main reason being its odor is similar to rotting meat while scientific name signifies shape resembling that of an imperfectly formed male organ. The plant flourishes during monsoon from October till March amidst tropical forests. The tallest titan arum plant in the world is growing in the Citrus Orangery at Green Ark which is a newly built conservatory complex that houses rare and endangered plants for the Botanical Garden. The last titan arum plant has also bloomed and it was 3 meters and 17 centimeters tall. Like in previous seasons of blooms at the Botanical Garden the flower of titan arum lasts for only 48 to 72 hours.
