Yerevan (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Armenian government adopted the draft regulation of launching the accession process of the country to the European Union.

During its Cabinet meeting on 9 Jan 2025, the Armenian government passed a resolution backing the draft law of Armenia on the launching of the accession process of the country to the EU.

The subject was presented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Ararat Mirzoyan, who stated,

“As a citizen’s initiative, a draft law on the beginning of the process of Armenia’s accession to the EU has been presented for the National Assembly debate, and now the government must represent a position. We present to express a favourable position based on several occurrences.”

What did the Armenian PM say?

In his remarks, Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan stated that this conclusion does not signify the country’s membership in the EU since this matter can only be resolved through a referendum.

“With this decision, we confirm an independent foreign policy based on our interests, and it fits into the policy of balancing and equilibration in foreign policy. The Cabinet of Ministers of Armenia is not against this initiative, especially since this initiative, especially since it comes from the theses we have announced,”

He expressed.

How did the European Parliament boost Armenia’s aspirations?

In March 2024, the European Parliament adopted a resolution that substantially boosted Armenia’s aspirations for membership in the European Union. A resolution adopted with a vote of 504 to 4 asked for the EU to consider making Armenia a candidate for membership into the EU under conditions that require continued democratic reform and stability on the part of Armenia.

The resolution explicitly stipulates that if Armenia expresses interest in getting candidate status in the EU and continues its trajectory of democratic reforms, this may pave the way for a transitional phase in EU-Armenia relations.
