Antwerp (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Craybeckx Tunnel (E19) in Antwerp will close Nov 28-29, 2025, 9 p.m.–9 a.m., for AWV maintenance. Closures extend later than usual, affecting traffic in both directions.

As VRT News reported, the Craybeckx Tunnel on the E19 in Antwerp will be closed in both directions on Friday, November 28, 2025, and Saturday, November 29, 2025, the Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV) announced.

Maintenance work has been taking place in the tunnel since last summer. The current work focuses on repairing and upgrading the ventilation systems and the high- and low-voltage electrical networks. The lighting system was already completed earlier this year.

What is happening in the Craybeckx tunnel in Antwerp?

To reduce traffic disruption, the tunnel will be closed during nighttime hours, from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each night. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes and expect delays. The AWV said the maintenance is important to ensure the tunnel meets safety and traffic standards.

The Authority for Transport and Road Safety (AWV) carries out work on the tunnel’s power supply system. During this work, the tunnel will temporarily lose electricity. Without these systems, the tunnel cannot be used safely.

Drivers will be rerouted via the A12 during the closure. Officials mentioned that vehicles heading towards Antwerp should take exit 6 (Wilrijk/Hoboken). Those travelling towards Brussels should follow the Boomsesteenweg (N117).

The AWV warned that the closures may cause traffic delays. Road users are advised to allow extra travel time at night. Authorities stress that these measures are necessary to keep the tunnel safe and fully operational for all drivers.

The Craybeckx Tunnel on the E19 in Antwerp opened in 1972 to provide a faster connection between Antwerp and Brussels. Over the years, it has become a key route for daily commuters and freight traffic. The tunnel has undergone several upgrades to meet safety standards. In 2018, major work was done on the structure and ventilation systems.
