Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Brussels’ MIVB unveiled the new 42-meter Tram New Generation (TNG) from Alstom, Vienna, on Nov 18, 2025, set to enter service in 2026 after completing tests for safety, performance, and network compatibility.

How is Brussels’ MIVB upgrading public transport with the new 42m TNG?
The new Tram New Generation (TNG) still needs to complete several important tests before it starts regular service. Officials will check its compatibility with STIB’s infrastructure, test its braking performance, and assess the communication and dispatch systems. The heating system will also be tested to ensure it works properly.

MIVB said.
Officials mentioned that the TNG is designed to give passengers more space and comfort. It has wide doors and a low-floor design. The tram is also designed to improve access for people with reduced mobility. Inside, the layout is planned to enhance passenger flow and reduce congestion during busy periods.
“The tram has multifunctional spaces for wheelchair users and strollers, and the seating arrangement provides greater comfort on longer journeys,”
MIVB said.
Brussels’ public transport company STIB/MIVB is renewing its tram fleet with the Tram New Generation (TNG). The first TNG was delivered to the Haren depot in October 2021, followed by a second tram in April 2022 for testing. After months of trials, the first TNG started carrying passengers on line 51 in April 2023.
The tram’s design, created by Yellow Window, is inspired by Art Nouveau and won a Red Dot design award in June 2023. In total, STIB plans to introduce 90 TNG trams to improve capacity, comfort, and accessibility across Brussels’ network.
