Asse (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The AMOW police zone covering Asse, Merchtem, Opwijk, and Wemmel launched the “Dark Days” campaign. Dorien De Nijs urges residents to report suspicious activity and secure their homes.
As VRT News reported, the AMOW police zone, covering Asse, Merchtem, Opwijk, and Wemmel, in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium, has started its annual “Dark Days” campaign ahead of the switch to winter time on the night of October 25th to 26th. Dorien De Nijs of the AMOW police zone said,
“We always see a rise in break-ins during this time. That is why we are asking people to stay alert and report any suspicious activity immediately.”
How will AMOW police and residents prevent burglaries during dark days?
The AMOW police zone will increase patrols during the annual “Dark Days” campaign. Police say residents also play an important role in keeping neighbourhoods safe. People are urged to report any suspicious activity.
“We ask residents who see anything unusual to call 101 or 112,”
a police spokesperson said.
“Many hesitate to report because they don’t want to bother the police, but every call helps us act quickly and prevent crime.”
Police advised residents to lock doors and windows, use timers on lights, and let neighbours know if they are away for a longer period. Officers stress that community vigilance is important during the darker months when nights come earlier.
“You can request free burglary advice from us. We’ll come by and see what you can do to make your home more secure,”
says De Nis.
The AMOW police zone, covering Asse, Merchtem, Opwijk, and Wemmel, has launched its annual “Dark Days” campaign in 2024 ahead of the switch to winter time on the night of October 25th to 26th. Similar campaigns were run by the AMOW police in 2022 and 2023, focusing on community vigilance, advice on prevention, and increased patrols to reduce break-ins during the darker months.
