Bruges (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Extreme heat damaged several older concrete roads in Bruges, like Koolkerkse Steenweg and Maalse Steenweg. Alderman Franky Demon leads urgent and long-term repairs to ensure road safety.

AS VRT News reported, Bruges is fixing roads that are damaged by extreme heat. Some older concrete roads are breaking apart. Roads like Koolkerkse Steenweg, Maalse Steenweg, Sint-Hubertuslaan, Kolvestraat, and Odegemstraat have dangerous problems. The heat causes these roads to crack and rise, which is called “blow-ups.”

Officials mentioned that this is dangerous for drivers. The police put up warning signs and closed the roads that are the most dangerous. The city is also looking at all the old concrete roads to find more problems. They want to know which roads are most at risk and fix them quickly.

What is Bruges doing to fix heat-damaged roads safely?

The city is already fixing the worst road problems to keep everyone safe, as explained by Alderman Franky Demon. They started working on the most dangerous spots right away. Starting tomorrow, July 2, 2025, they’ll start fixing the damaged roads. They mentioned that they’re using materials that will last longer, not just quick fixes.

According to officials, the goal is to make the roads strong enough for the future, even with extreme heat. This is part of a bigger plan to change how the city works because of climate change. By working together and using good information, the city wants to fix the problems now and make the roads safer for everyone in the future.

Alderman Franky Demon says this is a bigger problem on older roads that haven’t been kept up as well, especially with the heat waves we’re getting now. He mentioned that the road problems are a serious safety issue that needs to be fixed right away. He wants everyone to know that it’s not just a small problem.

The city is taking action quickly to make the areas safe and is also planning long-term fixes. There might be road closures and construction, which could be annoying, but Demon asks for patience because it’s for safety. The city hopes to fix everything in a few weeks to make the roads safe for the future. Bruges wants to make its roads better so they can handle the heat and keep everyone safe.
