Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – EU Council President Antonio Costa reaffirms unwavering support for Ukraine, aiming for eventual EU membership and emphasizing the fight for international law and territorial integrity.
President of the European Council Antonio Costa in a joint press session with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Brussels ahead of the European Council meeting said that the European Union will continue to support Ukraine both in times of war and peace and someday Ukraine will be greeted as a European Union member state. Later this month, European Council President Antonio Costa invited Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the meeting of the European Council.
At their summit in Brussels on 19 Dec 2024, European Union Heads of State or Government will examine the latest developments in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the European Union’s support for Kyiv, amidst the tension of the new US administration’s policy to the dispute
New EU Council President Antonio Costa said:
“At this session, we will examine two main points. First of all, Ukraine, and then Europe and the world. About Ukraine, we must be very straightforward: you can count on our full and uncompromising support whatever it takes and for the time it is required. Now – in war, in future – in peace. We want to accommodate you someday here as a member of the European Union.”
The European Council President ensured Zelenskyy that the European Union would
“operate with you for this and to succeed in a comprehensive, just and lasting stability.”
“This fight in Ukraine is against the Ukrainian people, is on European soil, where at stake are the universal codes glorified in the United Nations Charter – the right of territorial integrity, the right of self-determination, the right to have safe boundaries. That’s why this fight is not only about Kyiv, not only regarding Europe, it is about international regulation. And the international law must succeed and the invasion must be beaten,”
Costa stated.
