Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Brussels’ city center, the “Pentagon,” faces a rise in violent thefts, averaging 11 incidents daily. In contrast, the Louisa district reports only 8 petty thefts monthly. Mayor’s statistics reveal many offenders are repeat criminals, complicating legal actions. Aline Godfrin, an MR member and recent theft victim, emphasizes the need for improved safety measures.

The Brussels city center, known as the “Pentagon,” is facing a big problem with violent thefts, averaging 11 incidents each day. This high number is due to the area’s busy nature, attracting many residents and visitors, which makes it a target for crime. In contrast, the Louisa district, famous for shopping and business, has a much lower crime rate, with only about 8 minor thefts per month.

How is Brussels addressing the rise in repeat offenders and violent crime?

Law enforcement is actively working to tackle crime, resulting in many arrests. However, many arrested are repeat offenders, affecting the overall crime statistics. 29 people were sent to the public prosecutor’s office, which led to 12 arrest warrants being issued. Most of these offenders are in the country illegally, making legal proceedings more complicated.

The mayor shared crime data after Aline Godfrin, a member of the Reformist Movement (MR), asked for them. Godfrin made this request because she was recently a victim of minor theft, showing that this issue affects everyone, including public figures. Her case highlights that theft can happen even in safe areas. Godfrin stressed the need for better safety measures in Brussels. The mayor’s decision to release these numbers shows a commitment to addressing the problem and being open about crime in the city.
