On 27th October at about 9:45, the Brussels fire brigade responded to a fire on the 10th floor of a 12-storey building on Dokter Zamenhoflaan in Anderlecht. The fire started in a fuse box on a wall shared with a nearby apartment. Firefighters arrived quickly and managed to stop the fire before it spread to other parts of the building.
Did Walter Derieuw confirm that there were no smoke detectors in the Anderlecht fire?
It has been said that the firefighters handled the situation well, the apartment where the fire started and the one next to it is now unsafe because of heavy smoke damage. The people from these apartments will need to find somewhere else to stay because of the damage. The fire brigade will also check what caused the fire, especially looking at the fuse box for any problems.
According to Walter Derieuw from the Brussels fire brigade, in the first apartment, a woman and her three kids were inside when the fire started. They got out safely by themselves and were checked by emergency workers, in the second apartment, a person was sleeping and had to be woken up and helped out by the emergency services. She inhaled some smoke and received treatment on-site. He mentioned that neither apartment had smoke detectors. Starting January 1st next year, all homes in the Brussels area will need to have smoke detectors.
