KATWIJK AAN ZEE, Netherlands, 8 October, (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Dutch AI drone technology is supporting Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its air defences against Russian attacks, with Netherlands-based software company Intelic developing an artificial intelligence system that connects radar, sensors and interceptor drones. The development reflects growing European investment in advanced military systems as Ukraine faces continued aerial bombardment.

Dutch AI System Connects Advanced Drone Defence Equipment
Intelic demonstrated its Nexus software during flight tests at a former airbase in Katwijk aan Zee on 30 September.
The demonstration involved radar detecting a simulated hostile target, artificial intelligence helping identify it and an interceptor drone responding to the threat.
The company has secured a €30 million contract with the Dutch Ministry of Defence to improve air-defence capabilities.
Its software connects equipment from different manufacturers, allowing sensors, surveillance systems and interceptors to exchange information through a shared platform.
This approach addresses a major challenge facing European defence manufacturers: ensuring that independently developed military technologies can operate together.
Artificial Intelligence Supports Faster Military Decisions
The Nexus platform uses artificial intelligence to process information from multiple battlefield systems and support rapid responses.
Rather than requiring operators to manage each device separately, the software combines information from detection equipment and interception systems.
During the demonstration, a human operator authorised the interceptor’s launch.
The technology is intended to support faster decision-making when hostile drones approach protected areas.
Intelic is also working in Ukraine, where its software complements existing battlefield management technology.
However, independent evidence establishing the system’s overall effectiveness in combat has not been publicly presented.
Dutch Government Expands Defence Support for Ukraine
The Netherlands has continued investing in Ukrainian military capabilities, particularly unmanned aerial systems.
On 8 September, Dutch Defence Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius announced another €250 million for Ukraine’s drone capabilities.
The allocation brought the Netherlands’ total contribution to the Drone Line Initiative to €1 billion.
According to the Dutch Ministry of Defence, the additional funding came from previously allocated military assistance resources.
The government also confirmed further ammunition support for Ukraine’s F-16 fighter aircraft.
Defence Minister Highlights European Security
Yeşilgöz-Zegerius has emphasised the connection between military assistance for Ukraine and European security.
In the Dutch government’s September announcement, she said every euro supporting Ukraine represented a direct investment in the Netherlands’ security.
The minister also highlighted the importance of drone support in helping Ukrainian forces resist Russian attacks.
Her remarks underline the Dutch government’s position that supporting Ukraine’s defence contributes to wider European security.
Why Advanced Drone Systems Matter for Europe
The development of Dutch AI drone technology comes as European governments seek more adaptable and coordinated air-defence systems.
Russia’s continued use of drones and missiles has increased demand for equipment capable of identifying and intercepting aerial threats quickly.
For Ukraine, better integration between existing technologies could help reduce response times and improve coordination.
For European defence companies, the project illustrates opportunities to develop interoperable military systems using artificial intelligence.
What Happens Next for Ukraine’s Air Defences?
Intelic’s work in Ukraine is continuing as the company develops software capable of integrating additional defence technologies.
The Netherlands is also maintaining its wider military assistance commitments.
Further operational testing and battlefield experience will be important in determining how effectively the software performs against changing aerial threats.
The development represents another stage in European efforts to support Ukraine’s military capabilities while advancing the use of artificial intelligence in modern defence systems.
