Kramatorsk, Ukraine, 8 October, (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A deadly Russian bomb attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk has killed at least 33 people and injured 18 others, according to Ukrainian emergency authorities. The strike hit a busy street where two passenger buses were operating, raising fresh concerns about civilian safety as fighting intensifies across the Donetsk region.
Ukrainian officials accused Russian forces of deliberately targeting civilians. The bombing caused extensive destruction and prompted authorities to suspend public transport in Kramatorsk and neighbouring Sloviansk.
Russian Bombing Leaves 33 Dead and 18 Injured
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service confirmed the death toll on Thursday, reporting that 33 people had died and another 18 had been wounded.
The Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office said the strike occurred at approximately 10am local time on 8 October. Investigators identified the weapon as a UMPB D-30 SN guided aerial bomb.
The munition struck a street where two passenger buses were travelling. Fires broke out, and emergency workers responded to assist casualties and extinguish the flames.
Photographs released by Ukrainian authorities showed a severely damaged bus and debris scattered across the road.
The reported death toll rose during the morning as emergency services assessed the destruction.
Ukrainian Officials Condemn Civilian Casualties
Donetsk regional governor Vadym Filashkin condemned the bombing and accused Russian forces of deliberately attacking civilians.
“Russia comes to Ukrainian land with death,” Filashkin said in a statement published on Telegram.
Ukraine’s parliamentary human rights commissioner, Dmytro Lubinets, also criticised the attack, accusing Russian forces of repeatedly striking civilian areas in Kramatorsk.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the location of the bombing as a bus stop.
There was no immediate response from Moscow to the allegations. Russia has repeatedly denied intentionally targeting civilians during its military operations in Ukraine.
Why Kramatorsk Is Important to Ukraine’s Defence
Kramatorsk remains an important Ukrainian-controlled city in the Donetsk region and forms part of a defensive network alongside neighbouring Sloviansk.
The two cities are strategically significant because of their transport connections, military logistics and positions within Ukraine’s eastern defensive lines.
Russian forces have increased drone and guided-bomb attacks against settlements in the area as Moscow continues efforts to capture additional territory.
Russia has demanded that Ukraine surrender the remaining Ukrainian-controlled areas of Donetsk as part of its conditions for ending the conflict. Kyiv has rejected those demands.
Deadly Strike Disrupts Transport and Civilian Life
The attack has created immediate difficulties for residents who depend on public transport to reach workplaces, medical facilities and essential services.
Local authorities suspended bus operations in Kramatorsk and Sloviansk following the bombing.
The decision reflects growing concerns about the vulnerability of civilian transport routes near the front line.
The latest deaths also add to the humanitarian consequences of Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022.
What Happens Next in Eastern Ukraine?
Ukrainian emergency authorities have reported their response to the bombing, while prosecutors have released preliminary information about the weapon used.
Further investigative findings may establish additional details about the circumstances of the strike.
For residents of Kramatorsk, immediate concerns centre on safety, access to transport and the continuing threat of aerial attacks.
The latest tragedy underscores the risks facing civilians in eastern Ukraine as military operations continue and diplomatic efforts have yet to produce an end to the war.
