Ghent (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A fight on Bevrijdingslaan in Ghent’s Brugse Poort saw 15 men attack each other with sticks and a crowbar; a car window was smashed. A resident filmed the chaos.
As VRT News reported, on June 23, 2025, a fight happened on Bevrijdingslaan in Ghent‘s Brugse Poort area, around 7 to 8 PM. About 15 men fought in the street, using weapons like sticks and a crowbar, as seen in a video. People saw chaos as they attacked each other.
A 22-year-old man was stabbed and went to the hospital. Police came and closed off the street. They searched houses and arrested 6 people. Someone said the fight might be about a family issue, but the police haven’t confirmed this yet.
What is the reason of recent street violence in Ghent’s Brugse Poort?
The reason for the fight is still unknown. The East Flanders public prosecutor is in charge and will share details at 10 AM. This will explain if it was a family issue, what charges the arrested people face, and if more arrests will happen. The incident worries the neighbourhood. Police are still working to find out everything that happened and to keep the area safe.
Since spring started, the neighbourhood has felt more tense. The city of Ghent acted in mid-March 2025 to help. They did ID checks on people known to the police to stop repeat offences. Police patrolled more to be seen and stop violence.
They visited homes of young people at risk of crime, talking to them and their families. They also held meetings with social workers and local groups to work together on the problems in the neighbourhood.
According to the officials, even with the help, problems came back at the start of the month with another fight. Police had to step in and arrest people, but they didn’t say how many. The city council said last Friday, June 20, 2025, that they would put up 4 cameras in important spots. 1 camera is already working.
