Kyiv (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed it was “very important” that Ukraine’s plight was heard and not forgotten, a day after a hectic White House discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump.
“It is very important for us that Ukraine is heard and that no one forgets about it, neither during the war nor after,”
He stated in a social media post alongside footage of a discussion with the Ukrainian community in the US.
“It is important for people in Ukraine to know that they are not alone, that their interests are represented in every country, in every corner of the world.”
Zelenskiy had witnessed the Oval Office session on Friday with Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance as an event to win more aid for Kyiv’s war effort against Russia. But the discussion descended into acrimony and drove ties with Kyiv’s most significant wartime ally to a new low.
What happened between Zelenskiy and Trump at the Oval Office?
A day earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s gathering with Donald Trump concluded in disaster. The two leaders disputed in an extraordinary conversation before the world’s media at the White House over the fight with Russia.
Zelenskiy had witnessed the meeting in the Oval Office as an option to persuade the United States not to side with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Instead, U.S. President Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticised Zelenskiy, stating he showed disrespect, driving ties with Kyiv’s most significant wartime partner to a new low. The Ukrainian leader was told to depart, a U.S. official stated.
A deal between Ukraine and the US to jointly materialise Ukraine’s rich natural resources, which Ukraine and its European partners had hoped would usher in more profitable relations, was left unsigned.
The already-tense session blew up when Vance emphasised the need for diplomacy to fix the biggest battle in Europe since World War Two. Zelenskiy, his arms tucked, disagreed that Putin could not be delegated and stated that Vance had never visited Ukraine.
