Zeebrugge man killed near Stella Maris Church, suspects flee

Zeebrugge (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A 56-year-old man was beaten to death near Stella Maris Church in Zeebrugge. 2 Suspects fled. Police, West Flanders prosecutor Griet De Prest are investigating.

As VRT News reported, A 56-year-old man was beaten to death in Zeebrugge, Part Bruges, West Flanders, Belgium, last night (Aug 22, 2025). It occurred around 10 p.m. in front of the Stella Maris Church while the man was walking with his wife. 

Witnesses reported that the man had a dispute with 2 other men earlier in a nearby convenience store. The tw men then reportedly attacked him from behind, punching him several times. Griet De Prest from the West Flanders public prosecutor’s office confirmed that the victim died at the scene. Emergency responders arrived quickly but were unable to save him.

Who was beaten to death near Stella Maris Church in Zeebrugge?

Police have initiated a complete inquiry into the incident. Apparently, the suspects took off very shortly after the assault. Police are looking at video surveillance and taking witness statements in an effort to identify them. The investigation is in its early stages, and police say all leads are being pursued to make sure these individuals are found and punished.

Prosecutor’s office spokesperson said,

“We are reviewing security camera footage and conducting a neighbourhood investigation. The West Flanders federal judicial police are investigating the case under the supervision of an investigating judge. An autopsy will also be performed on the victim’s body.”

A violent incident occurred in Brussels on May 4, 2025, during the Belgian Cup final between Club Brugge KV and RSC Anderlecht. Fights broke out in several neighbourhoods, with stabbings, shootings, and attacks on people from certain communities. Many were injured, and police made multiple arrests. The public prosecutor promised to take strong action against those responsible.
