What is the history of crime in Evere?
Ever’s criminal history as a northeastern Brussels municipality follows national urban crime patterns across Belgium. Through time, Evere developed from its status as a tranquil rural-like region to a densely populated urban area following Brussels’ territorial growth. The late 20th century brought a turbulent increase in violent crime across Belgium, but the Brabant Killers’ multiple murders and armed robberies specifically avoided Evere.
The Brussels-north police zone under the jurisdiction of Evere also extends to control Schaerbeek and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. The crime statistics from this zone present a steady reduction of offences over two successive decades. Having expanded its population by 21% during the same period, Evere witnessed a 39% reduction in registered crime counts.
Crime statistics from 2014 showed thefts accounted for 36% of breakdowns, while special acts of parliament offences made up 37%, and bodily harm and sexual offences combined for 7%. Evere has been a diminishing criminal activity because of established law enforcement methods and community protection initiatives.
