Voeren (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Voeren approved a €1 million road plan (2026–2030) and land purchase in Teuven for parking; Alderman Yolanda Dams and Chief Stas also supported the 2026 “From Voer Tot Maas” police merger.

As HBVL News reported, the municipality of Voeren, in the province of Limburg, Belgium, has approved a major plan to upgrade its roads and parking areas. The council has given approval for the detailed specifications and cost estimates for the road maintenance program from 2026 to 2030. The tender is worth more than €1million.

What will Voeren’s €1M road plan and Teuven parking project mean for local mobility by 2026?

Alderman Yolanda Dams said the works include renewing asphalt, filling cracks, and making local repairs. He mentioned that the project will be carried out in stages to limit disruption for residents and road users. Parking areas will also be improved as part of the plan. The municipality wants to focus on preventive maintenance instead of emergency repairs.

“We want to significantly extend the lifespan of our road network and improve road safety,”

Alderman Yolanda Dams said.

The municipality of Voeren has approved the purchase of 2 plots of land in Teuven to expand parking facilities and improve access in the village. The sites are located at the intersection of Nurop, Hoofstraat, and Varnstraat, an area seen as important for local traffic.

A verbal agreement has been reached with the owner, allowing the municipality to proceed with the deal. The land will be rezoned as a municipal parking area and will also be available for multifunctional use in the future. The purchase will be included in the 2026–2031 multi-year plan.

The council also supported a plan for a new regional police partnership called “From Voer Tot Maas.” Acting Chief of Police Stas explained that the project will bring together the police zones of Voeren, Bilzen-Hoeselt-Riemst, and Lanaken-Maasmechelen.

“Cybercrime and other complex cases require the pooling of expertise and manpower,”

Acting Chief of Police Stas said. The cooperation is scheduled to start on January 1, 2026. When the new system begins, current partnerships, including the one with the Maasland Police Station, will end.

In 2021, the municipality of Voeren carried out a study with Toerisme Vlaanderen to assess parking problems in Teuven and nearby villages. The survey showed that 94% of residents had noticed growing parking pressure, especially in busy tourist areas.

Based on these findings, the council prepared a parking policy plan, which was presented for public review between July 18 and September 30, 2022, and officially approved in November 2022. The new land purchase in Teuven follows that plan. The police merger project, called “From Voer Tot Maas,” was later discussed in the council meeting of October 24, 2024.
