Kortrijk (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): A large WWII bomb was found near a shopping center, prompting evacuations and the deplovment of bomb disposal experts to safely defuse the unexploded ordnance.

On 18July 2024 at afternoon close to a shopping center workers found a bomb underground so emergency services acted quickly. They closed off the area and evacuated all people nearby like residents, shop owners and traders. This was done to keep everyone safe because bombs that haven’t exploded can be very dangerous. Experts who deal with bombs were brought in to deal with the situation. They used special methods to either take out or make the bomb safe. This operation needed careful planning to cause as little trouble as possible while keeping people safe.It has been said that these events show the difficulties that communities in places with past military activities deal with emphasizing the need for being alert with safety rules and ready to respond quickly to dangerous finds.

What prompted the evacuation and bomb disposal response near the shopping center?

The police spokesperson, Thomas De Tavernier confirmed they found a big American-style bomb from World War II. It looks like a shell and was discovered in the area so the authorities acted fast to keep people safe. Because of the historical importance and dangers of unexploded bombs the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (DOVO) was called to handle it. It has been said that their skills will be important in taking apart and getting rid of the bomb safely reducing any risks to the community nearby. Finding old wartime items in different places shows that there are still things from wars that need attention, so teams like DOVO have to act quickly together. While they work on making the bomb safe the authorities are taking steps like moving people away and setting up safe zones to reduce any dangers until everything is sorted out.

In the station area there were many bombs dropped during World War II so it’s not surprising to find war items there. But now they found a really big one, which is getting noticed because of its size and possible danger. They said that  old things from history keep showing up and they need to be dealt with carefully to keep the people living and working there safe.
