Kyiv (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Ukraine’s defense authorities said on February 9, 2025, that it downed 70 drones out of the 151 that Moscwo launched to attack the country overnight.
As reported by Reuters, Ukraine’s air force stated that 74 drones did not achieve their targets, likely due to electronic warfare, and two were yet in the air, it said in a statement.
In his remarks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy commented that this week, Russia had fired 1,260 aerial bombs, nearly 750 drones, and more than 10 missiles of different types against Ukraine.
He said that Russian military production depends on sanctions evasion techniques, high oil prices and an inadequate number of Ukrainian long-range missiles and drones.
We are grateful to all partners who are strengthening sanctions, but more global efforts are needed to decrease Russia’s oil industry capabilities,
Zelenskiy said.
Zelenskiy announced that Ukraine would boost the production of missiles and drones and urged all allies to invest in the Ukrainian defense industry.
How are Russian attacks evolving in early 2025?
Over the past two months, the Russian forces have pressed on with military campaigns in Ukraine, launching drone attacks.
Russian forces launched several strikes against Ukraine between February 5-6, 2025. It targeted the place with 77 Shahed and decoy drones from multi locations such as Oryol, Kursk, and Bryansk oblasts; Millerovo in Rostov Oblast; and Shatalovo in Smolensk Oblast.
The Ukrainian Air Defenses brought down 56 drones across areas such as Kharkiv, Poltava, Sumy, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Cherkasy, Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Vinnytsia. Several, however hit the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv city and other target areas.
Moreover, on February 1-2, 2025, a significant barrage of Russian missiles and drones attacked residential buildings in Ukraine’s cities, including Kyiv and Poltava. At least twelve civilians were killed in this attack phase. The assault involved more than 40 missiles along with over a hundred drones launched by Russia.
