What happened in the Antwerp Home invasion Involving fake frozen Food Company Employees?

On June 9, 2023 two guys showed up at a lady’s house on Merksemsesteenweg in Antwerp pretending to work for a frozen food company. They rang her doorbell and when she let them in one of the guys hit her nose and pushed her down. Then they tied her up with a radio cable and went through her house, taking jewelry and 600 euros. This break-in not only hurt the lady physically but also left her very upset. The lady said that one of the guys actually worked for a frozen food company and had been to her house two weeks before. Because of this she could give the police a good description of him. But she had a hard time describing the second guy accurately. She did remember one important thing. The second guy wore a jacket with noticeable orange shoulder parts. This specific detail combined with knowing the first guy could really help the police find and identify the suspects.

After looking into the company making phone calls and checking camera footage and dat, they found Christof C. from Lint and Jasin EM from Mortsel. At first both denied being involved. Later, Christof C. admitted they went into the lady’s house but he claimed Jasin EM was the one who used violence. Jasin EM kept denying it. In February the Antwerp criminal court gave them nine years in prison but they both appealed. Jasin EM said he went to Deurne with Christof C. but denied going inside. The court of appeal didn’t believe his story. Christof C. appealed because he thought his punishment was too harsh.

What Punishment Did the Court Give to the Home Invasion Suspects in Deurne?

After the break-in on Merksemsesteenweg in Antwerp the court gave a strong judgment. At first the suggested sentences for the two guys were thought to be too light. The court added another year to each of their prison terms. This decision was influenced by the fact that both men had been convicted before for serious thefts involving violence. Even though they had been in trouble with the law in the past .They hadn’t learned their lesson and were still committing crimes. The court was really upset about how badly the guys treated the elderly lady. They hit her, pushed her down, and tied her up showing they didn’t care about her at all. Because of thisand their past crimes, the court decided to give them a tougher punishment. They each got ten years in prison and a 2,000 euro fine. The court wanted to show how serious they thought the attack was and send a message that violent crimes especially against vulnerable people are not okay.
