Dubai, UAE, 31 August, (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – US President Donald Trump has promised a strong response to Iran after Tehran fired missiles towards American military positions in Jordan, escalating Trump Iran tensions in the first direct exchange of fire between the two sides in about a month.
The Iranian action came after US forces struck targets on Larak Island, near the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command said the operation targeted Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps equipment after personnel were observed preparing what Washington described as an imminent threat involving rockets and sea mines.
Trump later told Fox News, according to Reuters: “We’re going to hit them hard. There will be a response.” He said US air defences had prevented the Iranian missiles from causing damage.
Why have US-Iran hostilities resumed?
Washington said the strike on Larak Island was intended to prevent Iranian forces from deploying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway for global energy supplies.
Reuters reported, citing Iran’s Tasnim news agency, that three people were killed in the US strike. Iran responded by firing missiles towards two American bases in Jordan. Jordan said it intercepted missiles that entered its airspace.
Tehran also claimed to have targeted Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates. The UAE defence ministry rejected that claim. UAE authorities separately confirmed that the country’s air force had intercepted an Iranian drone over its territorial waters.
An Iranian source familiar with decision-making described the confrontation to Reuters as “limited and contained”, but warned that Tehran would respond strongly if the United States carried out further attacks.
The renewed Trump Iran tensions are unfolding alongside continued US economic pressure on Tehran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has indicated that Washington could impose additional secondary sanctions, including measures focused initially on banks.
What could Trump’s warning mean for Iran?
Washington has confirmed that a response is planned, but the Trump administration had not publicly disclosed its scale, timing or potential targets at the time of publication.
Further US military action could prompt another Iranian response, increasing security concerns for American forces and regional countries hosting US military facilities.
The confrontation has also returned attention to the Strait of Hormuz. Any significant disruption to shipping through the waterway could affect global energy supplies, with oil markets already reacting to the renewed fighting.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has continued to signal an interest in diplomacy despite the military confrontation. Speaking at a regional security meeting in Kyrgyzstan, he said Tehran wanted “agreement and understanding” and argued that continuing the conflict was not in the interests of Iran, the region or the wider international community.
For now, attention is focused on the response promised by Trump and whether Tehran retaliates again. With both governments warning of consequences for further attacks, Trump Iran tensions remain high after a month of relative military calm.
