Sint-Truiden (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): A new housing project by Wonen in Sint-Truiden, vzw Vistha, and vzw ‘t Heft offers affordable apartments for young adults aged 18-25, promoting independence and community support.
The housing project is a partnership between Wonen in Limburg (WiL), vzw Vistha, and vzw ‘t Heft. It aims to provide affordable living spaces for young adults aged 18 to 25. Ten young people have already moved into the rental apartments, which have their own private spaces and a shared common room. The common room is a place where residents can hang out, connect, and build a community, helping to reduce loneliness and create a supportive atmosphere. This setup encourages them to interact with each other while still having their own independence.
How does the support system in Sint-Truiden’s housing project help young residents?
The project also has a support system where residents can get help from trained supervisors. These supervisors can assist with things like managing money, keeping a home, and dealing with personal or social problems. This support helps young residents gain the skills and confidence they need to live on their own. The partnership between WiL, vzw Vistha, and vzw ‘t Heft makes sure the project not only gives a place to live but also helps young people with their overall needs, encouraging social inclusion and personal growth.
“With this housing project, young people can start living independently in a safe place,” says Bart Maes from VZW Vistha. “Young people are our future, so it’s important to support them. Many of these young people have little experience living alone and often come from tough situations.” He adds, “That’s why it’s crucial to give them this chance and help them as much as we can. They can stay here for 2 years, and during that time, we assist them in finding their way in society. We know there are many other young people looking for safe housing like this, so I hope we can create more similar projects in the area in the future.”
