Sint-Truiden (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Groenmarkt fountains in Sint-Truiden are shut due to a broken pump, wiring damage, and clogged nozzles. Mayor Vandenhove and Filip Moers promise thorough repairs for long-term safety.

As VRT News reported, the fountains at Groenmarkt in Sint-Truiden are out of service again. A regular check revealed several problems in the system. A main issue is a broken pump, which is essential for the water jets. Without enough pressure from this pump, the fountains can’t work properly.

Further inspection showed other issues, like damaged electrical wiring, likely from being wet for too long, and blocked nozzles from dirt. Because of these combined problems, only a few water jets still work.

Why are Sint-Truiden’s Groenmarkt fountains shut down?

The city council in Sint-Truiden has closed the fountains. They’re doing a full check and big repairs because the damage is bad. They talked with the company fixing the fountains and the people who built them. They won’t just do quick fixes anymore. They want to fix everything so the fountains work like new and don’t break down again.

They will change broken parts like the pump and wires. They will also clean or replace the parts. The city doesn’t know when the work will be done yet. It depends on what they find and if they can get the parts. But they want to keep this important part of the public square working well.

Mayor Ludwig Vandenhove, from Vooruit, has spoken about the fountain problems in Sint-Truiden. He is asking everyone to be patient and understanding. He is aware that it is disappointing that the fountains aren’t working, especially during the hot summer days. The fountains are positioned at the Groenmarkt.

He stresses that the most important thing is safety. Not only for passersby but, even more, for the children who like to play near the fountain. According to Vandenhove, just doing quick fixes wouldn’t be responsible. Instead, the city has decided to shut down the fountains now. They will do a thorough check and find long-term solutions to fix the technical problems once and for all.

Filip Moers, who is in charge of Public Works and also from Vooruit, said the city is working hard to stop the fountain problems from happening again. They are looking at big changes to help the city fix things faster and better in the future. They want to make the whole system better so it lasts and works well.

Even though the fountains are being repaired, the city is exploring other methods to beautify the city centre. They are looking at possible temporary things like shade, mist sprayers, or perhaps some fun events to enhance the people’s experience, in light of waiting for the work to unfold.
